The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced a significant decline in canned fish production, attributing the downturn to reduced fishing activity. This reduction has led to public complaints about the scarcity of seafood products in local shops.
In a media statement on July 16, 2024, MIFCO explained that the recent decrease in fishing activity over the past few weeks is the main cause of the dwindling seafood supplies in stores. The company highlighted that while there are no restrictions on the sale of canned fish, other types of fish products can only be produced when the raw material is available. MIFCO assured the public that once the fishing situation improves, store shelves will be restocked.
Despite the current shortage, MIFCO confirmed that fish products would continue to be available in its stores. The fisheries sector remains a critical component of the Maldivian economy, providing employment and serving as the main source of protein for the average Maldivian meal. The recent decline in fish stocks and its impact on production underscore the sector’s vulnerability to environmental and economic fluctuations.
Additionally, the fisheries sector recently faced another challenge as fishermen protested against uncleared payments owed by the government. These protests highlighted the financial struggles within the industry and called for prompt government action to resolve the payment issues. These events have drawn attention to the need for sustainable fisheries management and better support for those who rely on this vital industry.
