In a significant boost for renewable energy in the Maldives, Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim inaugurated a state-of-the-art 2.5 MW Solar PV hybrid system and a 1.9 MWh Battery Energy Storage System. Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the new infrastructure has been installed across 12 inhabited islands of Thaa Atoll.
The installations represent a major step towards reducing the region’s reliance on diesel. The systems are expected to help FENAKA, the Maldivian utility company, avoid burning 1.2 million liters of diesel annually, thus preventing the emission of approximately 3,300 tons of CO2. Notably, five of these islands will now benefit from the ability to switch off their diesel generators for 5 to 7 hours during daylight hours.
This achievement aligns with President Dr. Muizzu’s pledge to develop renewable energy systems that will meet 33% of the nation’s electrical needs within the next five years. The successful implementation of this project marks a milestone in the Maldives’ journey toward a more sustainable energy future.
