Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is finalizing preparations to launch international bunkering services in the northern atolls on August 20. This initiative aims to position the Maldives as a key global bunkering hub.
MPL has deployed a pilot boat and a tugboat to Kulhudhuffushi City to facilitate the service. A partnership with Vitol Bunkers underscores the collaborative effort to enhance the Maldives’ global bunkering prominence.
MPL’s preparations include providing essential maritime assets and developing an administrative office, set to be completed by August 15. The bunkering service, crucial due to the Maldives’ strategic location near major shipping routes, is expected to boost economic growth.
The project will be executed in two phases: off-port bunkering services and developing a comprehensive port. This initiative is part of broader efforts to transform the northern islands into a key economic hub, leveraging the Maldives’ geographic location for regional economic development.
Anticipation is building for the economic benefits this new service will bring, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s maritime and economic landscape.
