Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has announced that individuals who previously acquired land for fish and poultry farms can now enter new agreements under the updated regulations, even if they followed the previous land allocation system.
Starting July 10, the Addu City Council has implemented new regulations for operating fish and poultry farms. The regulations categorize land allocation into two types: land allocated without tender rules and land allocated under tender rules. For non-tendered land, the rent is set at USD 1.94 per square meter, with a maximum plot size of 5,000 square meters.
Addu residents can apply for these land categories, with a limit of one plot per person. Land can be allocated for up to three years without a tender process. The land is divided into four types, and Maldivian businesses, including private individual businesses, companies, partnerships, local investment groups, and cooperative societies, are eligible to apply.
Existing agreements for land allocated before the new regulations will be canceled within three months. Mayor Nizar stated to PSM News that these agreements would be voided within this period, allowing those who acquired land under the old regulations to enter new agreements under the updated rules.
The new regulations also stipulate that any leased or sold land without council permission can be confiscated without compensation. Additionally, the council is authorized to impose fines ranging from USD 64.90 to USD 324.30.
These changes are part of the council’s efforts to streamline land allocation processes and promote sustainable farming practices in Addu City. The new rules aim to create a fair and transparent system for land allocation, benefiting local businesses and the community.
