A technical team from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited met with Minister Dr. Aishath Rameela to provide an update on the ambitious Agriculture Economic Zone (AEZ) project in Uthuru Thilafalhu. The project, which aims to reduce the Maldives’ dependence on imported agricultural products and ensure food security, is making significant headway.
Spanning approximately 200 hectares of reclaimed land, the AEZ project stems from a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on March 29th between the Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone Plc (MIDFZ) and China Harbour Engineering Company Limited.
With around 90% of the Maldives’ food currently imported, the AEZ represents a strategic move to diversify the economy and reduce vulnerabilities linked to import dependency.
Key Components of the AEZ Project:
- Land Reclamation: Reclaiming 200 hectares of land from Uthuru Thilafalhu (UTF).
- Primary Infrastructure Development: Building essential infrastructure to support agricultural activities.
- Industrial Agriculture Park: Establishing a central hub for agricultural operations.
- Passenger and Freight Terminals: Constructing terminals to enhance logistical efficiency.
- Fruit and Vegetable Production Base: Creating dedicated areas for cultivating fresh produce.
- Training Base for Agricultural Talent: Setting up facilities to train and develop skilled agricultural workers.
- Agricultural Products Logistics Distribution Center: Improving supply chain management through a dedicated distribution center.
The AEZ project is poised to strengthen the Maldives’ food security and contribute to a more self-sufficient and resilient agricultural sector
