Dhiraagu has inaugurated the SEA-ME-WE 6 (SMW6) submarine cable landing in the Maldives, marking the first time a Maldivian digital service provider has joined a global submarine cable system consortium as a co-owner.
The SMW6 submarine cable system is a global super-highway that connects Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Western Europe across eleven countries from Singapore to France, utilizing the latest undersea cable technology. Spanning 19,200 km, it boasts a minimum transmission speed of 100Tbps.
In 2021, Dhiraagu partnered with 16 global telecom and technology companies to become a co-owner of this international system. This significant investment provides the Maldives with direct access to key global internet exchange points and data centers, enhancing the country’s international connectivity. The improved quality and resilience of services will benefit both consumers and businesses, driving the future growth of digital services nationwide.
The official landing ceremony of SMW6 took place this evening at Hulhumalé Phase II, with Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar as the Chief Guest. Other government representatives were also in attendance.
“Dhiraagu has always been at the forefront of driving digital growth and transformation in the Maldives, connecting us locally and globally. The SMW6 submarine cable will ensure direct access to multiple internet exchange points without reliance on any single country. I thank Dhiraagu for their role in strengthening our telecommunications network and enabling the socioeconomic development of the country,” stated Minister Adam Shareef Umar.
“Connecting our digital network to the SMW6 submarine cable system is a crucial step towards establishing the Maldives as a global digital hub and increasing the resiliency of our digital backbone. This connection will help us provide higher speeds, reduce latency, and lower internet costs in the future,” said Ismail Rasheed, Dhiraagu’s CEO and Managing Director.
The SMW6 submarine cable system is expected to be completed by early 2026.
Dhiraagu continues to lead the digital transformation of the Maldives, empowering digital communities and enabling them to ‘take on tomorrow.’
