Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL) and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) have signed an agreement to expand the apron at Maafaru International Airport. This project is set to significantly enhance the airport’s infrastructure and increase its capacity.
Agreement Details and Project Scope
The agreement was formally signed by IASL’s Managing Director, Ibrahim Iyas, and MTCC CEO and Managing Director, Abdulla Ziyad. The expansion project involves paving an additional 15,300 square meters, effectively doubling the airport’s current aircraft parking capacity. Currently, Maafaru International Airport can accommodate 13 business jets simultaneously; upon project completion, this capacity will increase to 26 business jets.
Strategic Importance
According to IASL, this expansion is essential for addressing the growing demand for parking space from business jet operators. The additional capacity will help mitigate the challenges currently faced by these operators.
“This expansion is a critical milestone for Maafaru International Airport. By doubling our aircraft parking capacity, we are not only meeting the growing needs of business jet operators but also positioning Maafaru as a key gateway in the region, capable of delivering exceptional services for our customers and enhancing operational efficiency,” stated Ibrahim Iyas.
Project Timeline and Future Outlook
The project is expected to be completed within six months, ensuring that Maafaru International Airport is well-equipped to meet the future demands of the aviation industry. This expansion will further solidify Maafaru’s role as a vital hub in the region, enhancing its capacity to serve a growing number of high-end travelers and improving overall operational efficiency.
