The Indian government has expanded ports for exporting essential commodities to the Maldives, enhancing trade under a bilateral agreement.
Initially, four ports were designated in April: Tuticorin, Mundra, Nhava Sheva, and Tughlakabad. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) recently added Kandla and Vishakhapatnam ports, making it six ports for 2024-2025 exports.
Despite general prohibitions, India’s Neighborhood First policy allows these exports to the Maldives. The export duration was extended in April at the Maldivian government’s request, with a 5% increase in allowed import quantities.
India will supply the Maldives with essentials like eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, flour, sugar, and lentils. The previous three-year permit expired in March, leading to a one-year extension.
India ensures uninterrupted supply at special prices despite potential export bans, highlighting strong bilateral relations and India’s support for its neighbor.
