The Government of Japan has granted ¥161 million (approximately USD 1.2 million) to the Maldives for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS). The formal Exchange of Note took place today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attended by Japanese Ambassador Takeuchi Midori and Maldivian Foreign Affairs Minister Moosa Zameer.
The grant aims to provide fully funded master’s degree scholarships in social sciences at top Japanese universities to eligible Maldivians. Launched in 2020, the four-year program selects six Maldivians annually. These scholarships are intended to develop young civil servants who will play key roles in policy formulation and implementation in the Maldives, as well as strengthen bilateral relations between Japan and the Maldives.
Implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in partnership with the Maldivian Ministry of Higher Education, the JDS project has been active in 21 countries since 1999. This initiative underscores Japan’s commitment to supporting the socio-economic development of the Maldives.
