The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy is inviting investors to establish a 10-megawatt floating solar photovoltaic system in Addu City. The plan includes 2 MW installations at Maradhoo Jetty and Hulhumeedhoo Central Jetty, and an 8 MW system at Hithadhoo port.
The selected contractor will finance and maintain the installations for 20 years. Bids are due by October 29, 2024, with the contractor chosen in early 2025. The solar systems are expected to be operational by mid-2026, saving 4.43 million litres of diesel annually, equivalent to MVR 35.5 million.
Part of the ARISE project with the World Bank, this initiative aims to enhance solar capacity and modernize energy infrastructure across the Maldives. Additionally, the ASPIRE project will add a 3 MW solar system in Addu City, targeting combined annual savings of over MVR 46 million.
