The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy of the Maldives has signed an MOU with the Group of Earth Observations (GEO) to launch “The Global Ecosystem Atlas Accelerator for the Maldives.” This initiative marks the beginning of developing an atlas of the Maldivian ecosystem, which will support various developmental and environmental preservation projects.
The Atlas initiative aims to enhance environmental protection and resource management efforts in the Maldives. It will support the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan in line with the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework and aid in the creation of natural parks, biosphere reserves, and eco-tourism.
Funded by USAID and managed in collaboration with IUCN, the project will compile data on the Maldives’ environmental characteristics and provide detailed academic resources. The ministry stressed the importance of this project due to the Maldives’ reliance on natural resources.
Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim thanked GEO for selecting the Maldives as the pilot country for this project, which will help accelerate sustainability initiatives and revitalize damaged areas.
