A Maldivian delegation, led by Minister Moosa Zameer, is currently in China to discuss ongoing and upcoming projects with major Chinese firms. The four-day visit also includes Finance Minister Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq and Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib. The aim is to strengthen ties and foster collaboration with China Tianying Inc., China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).
During their meeting with China Tianying, the ministers focused on progress in waste management and urban services, emphasizing sustainable development initiatives for the Maldives. “We also explored further collaborations and potential investments in the renewable energy sector,” Zameer shared on X.
The delegation’s discussions with CMEC centered on advancing collaborations on the Rasmale’ and Gulhi Falhu projects, which are pivotal for the Maldives’ infrastructure development. Meetings with CSCEC revolved around potential future collaborations on key developmental projects critical to the nation’s growth and urbanization.
This visit follows President Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to China in January, which marked a significant shift in Maldivian diplomatic relations. Since Muizzu took office in November, relations with India have become strained, highlighted by diplomatic tensions and a notable decline in Indian tourist arrivals. In contrast, ties with China have strengthened, underscored by high-level meetings and ongoing project collaborations.
The Maldivian government is keen to attract Chinese investments and expertise to enhance its development projects, particularly in infrastructure and renewable energy. The outcomes of these meetings are expected to further solidify the Maldives’ partnership with China and potentially lead to increased Chinese investment in the island nation’s development efforts. As the Maldives navigates its international relationships, the focus remains on sustainable development and economic growth through strategic collaborations.
