Minister Faisal of the Maldives actively participated in the UN General Assembly High-level Thematic Event on Tourism, reaffirming the Maldives’ dedication to sustainability and its influential role on the global stage. During the UN Sustainability Week, Minister Faisal’s contributions highlighted the Maldives’ commitment to shaping the future of tourism through international collaborations and sustainable practices.
Addressing the High-level Thematic Debate on Debt Sustainability and Socio-Economic Equality for All, Minister Faisal emphasized the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives, including climate change and external economic shocks. He called for debt relief, accessible financing, and reforms to the international financial system to support sustainable development in SIDS.
Building on this momentum, Minister Faisal presented the Maldives’ vision for a resilient and sustainable tourism sector at the High-Level Thematic Event on Tourism. He detailed a comprehensive strategy focused on resilience-building, innovation, and intensified collaboration, prioritizing climate change mitigation and public health crises while ensuring the long-term viability of island tourism.
Minister Faisal also took part in a Ministerial Roundtable on Sustainable Tourism and the launch of the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism. He highlighted the Maldives’ leadership in promoting environmental and social responsibility throughout the tourism industry.
Throughout the week, Minister Faisal engaged in productive discussions with international counterparts, including UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, UNGA President Dennis Francis, and tourism ministers from South Africa and Indonesia. These meetings explored collaborative actions on sustainable tourism practices, climate resilience, and enhanced connectivity.
The Ministry of Tourism remains committed to forging strong partnerships with international allies to ensure tourism serves as a catalyst for positive global transformation.
