Male’, Maldives – July 15, 2024: Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib announced on Monday that the majority of development initiatives undertaken by Fenaka Corporation during the previous administration have been halted due to insufficient financial allocations in the 2024 state budget.
Speaking at a parliamentary session where he was summoned for questioning, Dr. Muththalib responded to inquiries from MPs, reiterating that several developmental projects initiated by the former government are currently on hold.
“A considerable number of projects, particularly the water and sewerage projects awarded to Fenaka Corporation, have not progressed. Additionally, some projects managed by the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) are also paused,” Dr. Muththalib stated.
The minister pointed out the absence of adequate funds in this year’s state budget as the primary reason for these delays. He mentioned that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Finance to identify which projects can be initiated this year, emphasizing the need for proper arrangement and funding.
“Several projects have been listed in the budget, but the necessary funds have not been allocated. For instance, the ongoing causeway project might only receive two to three million, which is insufficient,” Dr. Muththalib added.
He assured that efforts are being made to secure the required funds, and the ministry is targeting the completion of essential water and sewerage projects within the next two years, with MWSC tasked to conduct the necessary surveys.
Dr. Muththalib’s remarks highlight the current financial challenges faced by the government in advancing critical infrastructure projects, underscoring the need for strategic financial planning and resource allocation.
